{"id":1130,"date":"2014-03-01T16:38:20","date_gmt":"2014-03-01T21:38:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aoh.com\/?p=1130"},"modified":"2014-03-01T16:38:20","modified_gmt":"2014-03-01T21:38:20","slug":"press-release-from-the-anti-defamation-chair-concerning-the-sale-by-walmart-of-defaming-merchandise-targeting-irish-americans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aoh.com\/2014\/03\/01\/press-release-from-the-anti-defamation-chair-concerning-the-sale-by-walmart-of-defaming-merchandise-targeting-irish-americans\/","title":{"rendered":"Press Release From the Anti-Defamation Chair Concerning the Sale by Walmart of Defaming Merchandise Targeting Irish Americans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1132\" alt=\"MayNotBeIrish\" src=\"https:\/\/aoh.com\/gobansaer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/MayNotBeIrish-225x300.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aoh.com\/gobansaer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/MayNotBeIrish-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/aoh.com\/gobansaer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/MayNotBeIrish.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>The Ancient Order of Hibernians calls on national retailer Walmart to immediately cease the sale of defaming merchandise targeting Irish Americans.<\/p>\n<p>Among items being sold are T-Shirts with such phrases as \u201c<i>I may not be Irish, but I Can Drink like One<\/i>\u201d and \u201c<i>Blame the Irish for My Behavior<\/i>\u201d.\u00a0 \u00a0These items are an outrage to those whose Irish Heritage traces to hard working Irish immigrants, not to a beer bottle, and seek in March, which is Irish American Heritage Month, to see their culture celebrated, not used as an excuse for aberrant behavior.<\/p>\n<p>Per AOH National Anti-Defamation Chairman Neil Cosgrove:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">\u201c<i>We noted and applauded when Walmart recently took a very public and principled stand against ethnic slurs in ending its relationship with Paula Deen in response to Ms. Deen\u2019s offensive epithets directed toward members of the African American Community.\u00a0 However, in carrying merchandise promoting negative stereotypes and reflecting a bigoted view of Irish Americans, we find Walmart guilty of the same offense and no little hypocrisy.\u00a0 We also note that a shirt with a phrase almost identical to that which Walmart is currently marketing, \u201cI may not be an Irish Girl, but I Drink like One\u201d, was previously marketed by another national retailer in 2010 only to be pulled when the Irish American community protested then.\u00a0 It appears that Walmart is stuck in a time warp with merchandise from 2010 and a view of Irish Americans from the 19<sup>th<\/sup> Century of the \u201cKnow Nothing\u201d Party.\u00a0\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><i>It is especially outrageous that Walmart is marketing these pernicious stereotype images of Irish Americans at a time when Americans of all ethnicities are recognizing the tremendous contributions of Irish immigrants and their descendants<\/i>.<i> Walmart\u2019s clear double standard as regards ethnic denigration when it comes to Irish Americans is offensive and unconscionable<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Ancient Order of Hibernians is calling for Walmart to cease the sale of this merchandise defaming Irish Americans immediately and to issue a formal apology to all Irish Americans via their website.\u00a0 We call on our 40,000 members, their families, the Irish American Community and our fellow Americans of all ethnicities to send a clear message to Walmart that there is no room in the America of the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century for bigoted ethnic based stereotypes <b><i>no matter who the target is.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Neil F.
