{"id":1884,"date":"2015-08-26T17:37:35","date_gmt":"2015-08-26T21:37:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aoh.com\/?p=1884"},"modified":"2015-08-26T17:37:35","modified_gmt":"2015-08-26T21:37:35","slug":"support-for-a-u-s-postage-stamp-honoring-the-1916-proclamation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aoh.com\/2015\/08\/26\/support-for-a-u-s-postage-stamp-honoring-the-1916-proclamation\/","title":{"rendered":"Support for a U.S. Postage Stamp Honoring the 1916 Proclamation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/aoh.com\/gobansaer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/poblacht-na-eireann-proclamation.png\" alt=\"poblacht na eireann proclamation\" width=\"130\" height=\"195\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1891\" \/>The American Irish Teachers Association is working to have a commemorative stamp issued in recognition of the Centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising.\u00a0 Such recognition is not without precedent, in 1989 the U.S. Postal Service recognized the 200<sup>th<\/sup> Anniversary of France\u2019s Bastille Day and the start of the French Revolution, it is equally fitting that the Easter Rising should similarly be commemorated.\u00a0 Though often absent from school history books, Ireland was an early and unfailing supporter of the fledgling United State as noted by George Washington: &#8220;<em>Ireland, thou friend of my country in my country&#8217;s most friendless days, much injured, much enduring land, accept this poor tribute from one who esteems thy worth, and mourns thy desolation. May the God of Heaven, in His justice and mercy, grant thee more prosperous fortunes, and in His own time, cause the sun of Freedom to shed its benign radiance on the Emerald Isle.&#8221;<\/em> It is therefore right and fitting that the USPS should recognize the Centenary of the start of the \u201c<em>the<\/em> <em>sun of Freedom to shed its benign radiance on the Emerald Isle.&#8221;
